A decorated doorstep creates a wonderfully festive welcome and can bring Christmas colour to even the smallest outdoor space.

Here is how to create a balanced display using seasonal plants, foliage, lights and decorations.

Start with your front door

Choose a wreath that complements the colour and style of your door. Traditional evergreen designs work beautifully with red berries, pinecones and warm lights, while frosted foliage and metallic decorations create a more contemporary look.

Make sure the wreath and its fixings are suitable for outdoor use.

Add seasonal containers

Place one large container or a matching pair beside the entrance.

Combine a compact evergreen or conifer with winter plants such as cyclamen, heathers, ivy and violas. Decorative branches, pinecones or weather-resistant baubles can add a festive finishing touch.

Introduce different heights

Arrange decorations at several levels to make the display feel more complete.

Use taller plants or small artificial trees towards the back, medium containers beside the door and lanterns or smaller decorations closer to the ground.

Keep steps, paths and entrances completely clear.

Add festive lighting

Outdoor lights create a warm welcome on dark winter evenings. Frame the doorway with a lighted garland or add suitable lights to small trees and containers.

Only use lights specifically described as suitable for outdoor use, and keep electrical connections protected from wet weather.

Keep the design coordinated

Choose a simple colour palette and repeat it throughout the display. Traditional red and gold feel warm and welcoming, while silver, white and cool green create an elegant winter appearance.
